Paul Meyer and Thibault Cauvin are the soloists in this collection of concertos by Pierre Vismer, the Geneva-born French composer whose works have been the focus of the Claves label. This 2-CD set features a new recording by the Orchestre de Douai Région Hauts-de-France, conducted by Kantorov, and an archival recording from the Luxembourg Broadcasting Corporation. After studying composition at the Conservatory in Geneva, he studied at the Paris Conservatory for three years from 1935 under Roger Ducasse and at the Ecole Normale de Musique, where he studied conducting with Munch. He returned to Switzerland during World War II, but returned to Paris in 1949 and became a French citizen in 1958. He was influenced by Fauré, Debussy, Ravel, and Roussel, and later by the music of Stravinsky. Like Jolivet and Thomazy, Vismer pioneered the concerto genre and left works for a variety of instruments. This album includes the Clarinet Concerto and the Guitar Concerto (world premiere recording).The soloists are Paul Meyer and Thibault Cauvin, two of the most renowned musicians of their day, and the performance is full of richness. The archive includes the Piano Concerto No. 3, performed solo by Yuri Boukoff. The work was first performed on September 10, 1974, by Orchestre National de France, conducted by Kazuhiro Koizumi, with Yuri Boukoff at the piano.
