The Doric String Quartet's Britten & Purcell!Formed in 1998, this British ensemble won the first division of the 6th Osaka International Chamber Music Competition, was acclaimed by Gramophone magazine as "one of the finest young string quartets" in the UK, and Chandos has high hopes for them as the next generation of main artists, The Doric String Quartet, recorded for its 20th anniversary in 2018, includes all three of Benjamin Britten's string quartets and "Divertimento" for string quartet. Also included is music for viol consort by Britten's favorite composer, Henry Purcell. Featured is the viola played by Elaine Clermont, an 1843 Francesco Giuzzani creation on loan from the Britten-Pears Foundation, an instrument previously used by Frank Bridge and then by Benjamin Britten himself.
